Tech Tip
Layout
Sketch
Did you know that you can drive a complex model by a sketch or
sketches? "Sure", you may quickly answer, all models are
effectively driven by sketches in Solidworks, but what if you
wanted to drive a complex model by a single sketch, or 3 sketches
representing the top, bottom, and right views? This is where
LAYOUT SKETCHES can be an effective tool. A LAYOUT SKETCH is
a sketch used to drive model geometry but is not actually absorbed
under a feature.
Using Layout Sketches is an advanced technique commonly used in
product design and is usually the first step in design automation
because it groups all model inputs into a central location.
This makes it easy to quickly modify geometry or input data without
having to find it's location in the feature tree. All you
have to do is modify a layout sketch at the top of the feature tree
and the model changes accordingly. It is possible to
consolidate all dimensions and geometry that define a model into a
couple of sketches and use those sketches to drive an entire
model.

level model geometry based off a 2D sketch picture:

Using commands like "convert entities"," extrude up to point",
"parallel plane at point", etc allow you relate your child features
back to your layout sketches. The 3D bottle below was made
using only the profiles defined in our layout sketches. No
other dimensional inputs are contained in any of the features.
