Ask the Engineer
Question of the Month
William K. writes:
Dear DesignPoint,
My company wants to upgrade to SolidWorks 2012 and we
need new hardware to do that. Do you have any recommendations or
specs for a new computer that will run 2012?
I also remember that the last time we got new
computers there were problems with the licenses when we installed
on the new machines. Are there any other steps we need to take
before installing on the new computers other than uninstalling
SolidWorks 2011 off the old ones?

Tech Tip
Selection Filter
Do you ever have trouble clicking on a face, edge, or point of a
model? Some complex models or assemblies have problems when
multiple edges or points lay behind a face you want to select which
can drive you crazy when trying to add mates. SolidWorks has a
Selection Filter toolbar that can help make your frustrations go
away. The default hotkey to turn this on is "F5". You can also turn
on any toolbar by using View > Toolbars or simply right clicking
on any existing toolbar or the Command Manager to view the
list.
The Selection Filter toolbar will default to the bottom of your
screen right under the Feature Manager Design Tree.
A quick list of the selections you can filter are:

- Vertices (V)
- Edges (E)
- Faces (X)
- Surface Bodies
- Solid Bodies
- Axes
- Planes
- Sketch Points
- Sketches
- Sketch Segments
- Midpoints
- Center Marks
- Centerlines
- Dimensions/ Hole Callouts
- Surface Finish
- Geometric Tolerances
- Notes/ Balloons
- Datum Features
- Weld Symbols
- Weld Beads
- Datum Targets
- Cosmetic Threads
- Blocks
- Dowel Pin Symbols
- Connection Point
- Routing Point
When you have a Selection Filter active your cursor will show up
with this symbol
. If you ever have trouble clicking
something you think you should be able to, double check your cursor
to make sure no Selection Filters were turned on by accident!
Notice that by default vertices, edges, and faces have hotkeys
assigned to them so they can be turned on by accident very
easily.
