Behind the Big Open

DesignPoint’s Open Houses are always great events. We get to showcase how additive manufacturing transforms business, and our partners get excited about the innovative possibilities for their own shop floors.  Occasionally, we get to be the excited one – seeing for the first time how More is Possible with one of our new product offerings.  That’s how I felt when DesignPoint hosted its first BigRep Open House last month.

We got an insider’s look at the BigRep STUDIO, a 3D Printer that offers high resolution 3D printing at a large-scale.  And there is a lot to be excited about. The industrial-grade machine has a print volume of 500 mm x 1000 mm x 500 mm that enables continuous printing of large objects in a space-saving package. The STUDIO fits easily through doors, making it easy to set up in any work space. How cool is that?! There’s a lot know about this 3D Printer, so here’s a quick summary of the top three things I learned about large format 3D printing thanks to the BigRep STUDIO.

1. High Speed and High Quality

The BigRep Studio offers a large selection of resolutions, offering a bevy of printing options.  With so many special high-speed settings available, you can print huge parts in way less time than I expected.  The Studio’s high-resolution options also ensure high quality products.

2. Multiple Materials

The BigRep printers are both open source AND dual extrusion, so you can pick any materials you want on the market and print with them simultaneously. That’s right – two different materials, printing at the same time. This could be your favorite ABS with PVA water soluble supports, or green ABS and blue PLA combining to form one part where different features have different colors. There is a lot of freedom both with materials and software settings.

3. Priced Right

Thanks to BigRep, large format 3D Printing is now very affordable! The BigRep STUDIO has a 40” x 20” x 20” build volume and is priced at $50,000; the BigRep ONE has a 40” x 40” x 40” build volume and is priced at $75,000. That’s very reasonable for machines that can print such large parts accurately. With financing options available this puts large format 3D Printing in the reach of many companies that couldn’t afford it previously.

Fast printing with great quality, a multitude of materials options, and affordably priced.  Large-format printing never looked so good.
