This new material is on fire! But don’t worry—it’s not a hazard to anyone, since the latest Onyx to join the Markforged material portfolio is actually flame-retardant.
What is Onyx FR?
Onyx FR is a new version of Onyx that has all the benefits of the original material plus self-extinguishing properties, hence the name FR for Flame Retardant. Onyx FR is UL94 V-0 rated down to 3 mm thickness. It is a nylon base with chopped carbon fiber and a flame-retardant additive.
Let’s dig into some of this, shall we? First, the distinguishing factor that is flame retardant. A flame retardant compound inhibits, suppresses, or delays the production of flames to prevent the spread of fire. Next, what is that whole UL94 V-0 coding? UL94 is the standard for flammability tests of plastic materials for parts in devices and appliances. V-0 rating is a preliminary indicator of acceptability. Customer parts are tested in accordance to customer’s specifications.

Some other distinguishing features for the super remarkable material:
- High quality surface finish
- High strength and low weight (especially when reinforced)
- Heat resistant
- Chemical resistance
- Reinforceable with continuous fibers
- Did we mention…flame retardant?
When should you use Onyx FR?
The new material is an excellent choice (at times even a requirement) for applications in industries that need flame-retardant properties. These industries include (but are not limited to) aerospace, automotive, defense, and electronics. If this is an industry you serve, there is no better time than now to explore 3D Printing with Markforged. Investing in additive manufacturing (AM) technology could yield a variety of great results like….
- Shortened development cycles
- Light weight, fuel efficient design (with high strength to weight ratio)
- Faster and lower cost for low volume manufacturing, with digital inventory
What do you need to use the new material?
Onyx FR is available exclusive for the Markforged Industrial series – which consists of the X3, X5, and X7. All you need is your industrial unit and your Eiger software (which is said to update for this material on May 7, 2019).
