SOLIDWORKS 2020 and the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform: What You Need to Know

Last Updated on by DesignPoint Team

Whether we want to admit it or not, 2020 is as good as here. With the onset of the new year (and new decade), it’s time to get rid of old, outdated practices and embrace the new. One way to do this professionally is by upgrading your software to the latest version.

At the same time, maybe you’ve heard rumors about SOLIDWORKS integrating with 3DEXPERIENCE in this iteration, and you’re wondering what to expect and if it’s really worth the time and effort to upgrade?

SOLIDWORKS 2020 is available now and, yes, with the new version come several updates, upgrades, and enhancements. This article will help you get a feel for the changes by first covering some highlights of the new version and then diving into the details, including a look at the 3DEXPERIENCE software, and what you can expect from this new release.

SOLIDWORKS 2020: Hitting the Highlights

The major thing to note about version 2020 is that it may seem less like a whole new version and more like a bridge between the 2019 version and Dassault’s 3DEXPERIENCE cloud platform. But more on that in a bit. The good news is that, unlike last year’s update, there are fewer new features and tools to have to learn in SOLIDWORKS 2020.

But what new features can you expect to see? There’s a great upgrade to the Detailing feature that opens large files even faster than version 2019 and allows users to work with the drawing fairly extensively (though the file is not fully loaded, meaning full functionality isn’t available in this mode).

Another cool new upgrade is the Make Part Flexible feature which allows you to work with parts, like springs, that have multiple positions and inherent flexibility. Your design can now—within seconds—recalibrate automatically to show the part either compressed or not (in the instance of our spring example).

The 2020 version also promises enhanced electrical design, data management, SOLIDWORKS PDM functionality, and improved connections with both the SOLIDWORKS Electrical connector and a new SOLIDWORKS PCB connector.

What is the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform?

3DEXPERIENCE, a Dassault product, is a business experience platform that goes beyond what you might typically think of design and engineering tools. This product has been proven to be both intuitive and user-friendly. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform is a value-added product that works exceptionally well for many users. Let’s take a look at what 3DEXPERIENCE has to offer its users.

Based on the understanding that a multidisciplinary and fully integrated design process (from design through delivery) is the way to go, the 3DEXPERIENCE platform has created a cloud-based, seamless product development workflow process. On its website, the platform claims to be a fit for organizations of every size and boasts the ability to offer “an expanding portfolio of interconnected tools to manage every aspect of your product lifecycle.” Sounds good, doesn’t it?

The innovative connection and collaborative applications for this tool may be enough on their own to convince you to buy into the 3DEXPERIENCE. Then, combined with the overall integrated experience of this software suite and the long list of benefits, there’s something great in there for everyone.

What the SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE Integration Mean for You

Prior to the 2020 version, SOLIDWORKS remained fairly independent of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, but that is changing, as evident with the release of SOLIDWORKS 2020. Perhaps looking to tap into SOLIDWORKS admirable base of six million users, Dassault is weaving the two platforms together to create what they’re calling their 3DEXPERIENCE.WORKS portfolio. SOLIDWORKS 2020 is the first of 10 applications to join this new portfolio.

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform offers a portfolio of solutions including parametric modeling, subdivision modeling, data and product lifecycle management, and advanced simulation.

What this really means for you, SOLIDWORKS users is—in all honesty—is OPTIONS! There are clear benefits to the Platform, the main one being–incredible integration.
